IntroductionThis project is an opportunity for students to take part in a art/research project at Chelsea. The starting point for this project is the so-called ‘educational turn’ in the art-world. The ‘educational turn’ can be described as the recent turn from the art educational institution towards the art-world. This project aims to recuperate the renewed exploration between art and pedagogy back into an inquiry towards the educational site, in this case Chelsea College of Art. The research group is based around a dialogue between students, tutors, artists and researchers. In this project the participating students share ownership of the goals, processes and outcome of the art and research. A group of students will have a collective opportunity to either consider their existing practice in relation to this ‘turning’ or to explore different ways of working in relation to pedagogy as art, individually or as a group. FLAG: Re-turning the Educational TurnFLAG will be part workshop, part social space, part lecture(s), part exhibition. FLAG will take place in the Triangle Gallery (FLG01) at Chelsea College of Art and Design between 27th and 30th of April 2010. The project aims to make visible various forms of knowledge transfer taking place within the art school institution, through a three-day intervention into the gallery as a space and Chelsea as a site. This is an invitation to anyone interested in and/or involved with forms of knowledge exchange to contribute to the programme of events or with material for the exhibition. FLAG is a project exploring and returning to what has been labelled ‘the educational turn’ in the art world; examining exhibitions/events like Unitednationsplaza, Documenta 12, and Night School-New Museum. We will re-turn the exploration of art and pedagogy to the educational site, in this case Chelsea, as a venture between participants in dialogue with each other and the institution, understood both as a physical entity and as a discursive arena. We are aiming to critically build on this ‘educational turn’ as it is found in the contemporary art world, bringing this enquiry back into the art school - exploring how art students and others can claim and investigate forms of pedagogic engagement as part of their practice. FLAG is in conversation with The Showroom Gallery, which is at the forefront of artist and gallery based research into how knowledge is constructed and shared, as well as SALT the regular indie arts publication produced by students based at Chelsea. Through collaborations like these, we hope to build on and share expertise, comparing how different sites construct knowledge.

ProposalsOutcomes to include but not be limited to: exhibition, publication, event or symposium. This is to be decided by participating students. The Triangle project space has been booked for this project and could be venue for exhibition, symposium or other kind of event.
