Q: Can we have assurance that in the future (next year), it will be possible to have the workshops open in the vital (certainly for momentum and morale) first three weeks of term, at least during the 75% of time that there aren't inductions for new students. Such facilities sitting dormant (although it appeared that they were staffed) seems ludicrous.

can we make it clear on blackboard or on here what is exactly open now and what isn't?

A: assurance seems these days only to be applicable to things affecting us negatively i'm afraid. student reps have voiced the concerns about the long closure of workshops after the summer break. i personally know that the workshops as well as the IT facilities have not been used for inductions etc for most of the time. as things go, we got deadpanned with sally's answers stating that a) the workshop closure was absolutely necessary and managed the best possible way b) the IT suites remain closed due to the theft of equipment in there

now, me and you know both know that this isn't satisfactory. i pointed out that we not only have to produce work for which workshops are essential, but also that practically we got a whole month stolen off us. it's a particular curse for the 3rd years as they have to get ready for MA applications which take place in january. also, having 8 computers in total for a student body of approx 1200 (wild guess...) defies any sane sense in the 21st century. if they don't secure their equipment it's their problem - we can't be held responsible for such issues. it might just as well have been staff who stole and not the students.

so no, no assurance here. the only thing that might be assured is that they WON'T stay open. we continue to fight though ;-)

oh, and please leave at least a date if not your name on your comment so we know when it's been posted. this webpage isn't up-to-date in most of its parts... (marcus, 3rd year painting rep, 4th dec 05)

Thank you Marcus, for this and the minutes of the meeting. I should know better than not to sign and date my comments - sorry! - Damian (5th Dec 05)

I just want to say that, even after two days at the art institute in san francisco, I have realised how stressful and problematic I found not having available facilities last year at chelsea. The opportunity to use good quality, reliable facilites with advice from qualified technicians is incredible and makes making work much easier. This is quite obvious, I know. There really is little excuse for its absence at Chelsea. I find myself wondering why those in control of the budget for such a large institution have managed to misspend so drastically? I don't like to complain without suggesting ways of making things better, but it seems there isn't much we can do about this, except hope it won't happen again - how are things this term?
